What to Wear for an Outdoor Spring Photoshoot in the Bluebells
Spring is the perfect time to capture beautiful, timeless family moments with me, a family photographer in Derbyshire. There are plenty of amazingly beautiful bluebell woods around Derbyshire and the East Midlands. These provide a stunning natural backdrop for an outdoor family photoshoot, with their delicate hues of purple and green creating a dreamy setting. Choosing the right outfits can enhance the beauty of your photos while ensuring you and your family feel comfortable and confident. Here are some expert styling tips to help you look your best for your spring bluebell photoshoot.
1. Choose Soft, Neutral, and Earthy Tones
When planning outfits, opt for colours that complement rather than compete with the natural surroundings. Generally speaking, I always advocate neutral and earthy tones for all of my family lifestyle photoshoots; whether it’s an at home newborn photoshoot or an outdoor family photoshoot. Neutral colours blend really well with most backgrounds and with each other, so can ensure cohesiveness between everyone in the photograph.
For spring in particular, soft pastels also work, along with muted earth tones, and neutrals work beautifully. Think shades of cream, beige, pale blue, soft pink, sage green, and light grey. These colours blend harmoniously with the bluebells and the greenery, creating a timeless look.
Please avoid black or grey, or colours that evoke vibes of Autumn or the festive period such as burgundy, burnt orange, emerald green or crimson red - these are all too overpowering at this time of year and can clash with the current backdrop. Please also avoid stark white as this does not work very well with my editing style as it can appear grey/blue and lack texture. Instead, opt for off-white, cream, ivory or beige which are all warmer toned.
2. Coordinate, Don’t Match
Rather than dressing everyone in identical outfits, aim for a coordinated colour palette. Choose two to three complementary colours and mix them across family members. For example, if one person wears a dress with soft blues and greens, others can wear solid-coloured clothing in those shades.
A foolproof and versatile colour palette I often recommend is blue. Most people already have blue-toned clothing in their wardrobe, including different shades of denim. Blue pairs beautifully with pastel colours such as pinks, purples, and greens, all of which complement a spring backdrop. You can also easily pair blue with neutral tones like brown, tan, beige, or cream for a timeless and cohesive look.
This spring outdoor family photoshoot is a great example of a complementary colour palette, featuring blues, pinks, and neutrals.
3. Dress for Comfort and Movement
Since bluebell woods can be slightly damp and uneven, it’s best to wear comfortable and practical footwear. Flat shoes, boots, or wellies in neutral tones work well. Avoid high heels or shoes that might sink into the ground. Flowing dresses, skirts, or relaxed-fit clothing allow for movement and create lovely, natural photographs.
4. Add Layers and Textures
Spring weather can be unpredictable, so layering is key. Light cardigans, denim jackets, or shawls can add warmth without overpowering your outfit. Soft textures such as linen, cotton, or knit fabrics also add depth and visual interest to your photos.
5. Avoid Loud Patterns and Logos
Busy patterns, bright neon colors, and large logos can be distracting and take away from the natural beauty of the setting. Instead, opt for subtle prints like delicate florals, gingham, or fine stripes, which can add character without overwhelming the image.
6. Accessorize Thoughtfully
A few well-chosen accessories can enhance your look without being overpowering. Flower crowns, simple headbands, soft scarves, or a delicate necklace can add a personal touch. For children, suspenders, bows, or a sunhat can be adorable additions.
7. Plan for the Weather
Spring sessions can range from sunny and warm to cool and breezy, so it's always a good idea to bring a light layer just in case. If it’s a little chilly, a cozy cardigan or a soft, neutral-toned blanket can keep little ones warm while still looking stylish in photos.
8. Think About the Setting
Since bluebells are delicate and protected, it’s essential to be mindful of how you move through the woodland. Avoid long trailing dresses that may drag on the ground, and remind little ones to tread carefully among the flowers.
9. Keep it Timeless
By choosing classic, well-fitted clothing in neutral and muted tones, your bluebell photos will remain elegant and timeless for years to come. Avoid anything overly trendy that might date your images.
